Weekend Reading and Local Fun

Reading

And the backlash over the new healthier school lunches continues. This week, the NYT did a round-up of lunch changes - and protests - around the country.

School Meals that Rock continued it's series this week  on changes schools can make - not to the calories in the meals - but to the school environment to make sure kids don't leave lunch hungry.

And to wrap up the topic of the changes school lunch is going through - read this thoughtful article that ran this week in the Huffngton Post confronting both the claims that food is being thrown out and that students are still hungry. (Thanks to food service consultant Julia van Loon for the link.)

Watching

Soda isn't good for you and polar bears shouldn't drink it either. The Center for Science in the Public Interest has just released a video that takes on the soda industry - watch it here and pass it on.

Bhavani Jaroff's I Eat Green website has a copy of the Organic Spies' undercover video on Whole Foods and GMOs that was pulled off YouTube. Watch it here.   The site also has more information on genetically-engineered foods and Bhavani's radio interview with Amy Hamlin of the NY Coalition for Healthy School Food.

Fun

Oyster Fest is this weekend in Oyster Bay! (Take the train!!)

Queens County Farm Museum is having a interesting Oktoberfest Dinner this weekend - buy tickets in advance.
